Abyssinian

About

Abyssinians are known for their wild, rosette-patterned coat โ€” swirls of hair that radiate out from multiple points across their body. They are lively, bold, and utterly unique in appearance.

History

Despite the name, Abyssinian guinea pigs did not originate in Ethiopia โ€” the name was popular in Victorian Britain for exotic-sounding breeds. They are one of the oldest pedigree guinea pig breeds, recognized in the late 1800s. Show standards require a minimum of 8 rosettes placed symmetrically.

๐Ÿง  Temperament

Energetic, mischievous, and confident. More independent than other breeds but very entertaining.

๐Ÿ  Care Notes

The rosette coat doesn't need as much grooming as long-haired breeds but benefits from occasional brushing to prevent debris buildup.

โœจ Fun Fact

Show-standard Abyssinians must have at least 8 perfectly placed rosettes to be competitive.
