Winter White Russian

About

Winter White Russian dwarf hamsters are known for their remarkable ability to change coat color โ€” turning white in winter months. They are slightly calmer than Campbells and very endearing.

History

Native to the grasslands of Siberia and Kazakhstan, Winter Whites were first described scientifically in 1773. In the wild, they turn white in winter to camouflage against snow. They became popular pets in Europe starting in the 1980s.

๐Ÿง  Temperament

Slightly calmer than Campbells, curious, social. Can be kept in pairs if bonded early.

๐Ÿ  Care Notes

Very similar care to Campbells. Also prone to diabetes. Seasonal coat changes may occur even in indoor pets under artificial light.

โœจ Fun Fact

Winter Whites can turn almost completely white in winter โ€” a trait triggered by shorter daylight hours.
